How much is pet insurance in Utah?
The average accident-and-illness policy in Utah costs $62 a month for a dog and $30 a month for a cat, according to Forbes Advisor, Best Pet Insurance in Utah (June 2026).
Forbes Advisor averages quotes including mixed-breed dogs aged 3 months to 7 years plus five purebreds; it doesn't say which cats it priced. The headline figures assume unlimited annual coverage, a $250 deductible and 80% reimbursement. With a $5,000 limit the averages are $45 for a dog and $22 for a cat. No city premiums are given. Banfield visit prices it cites run from $65 in Salt Lake City to $68 in Magna and Murray.
Your own price depends on your pet's species, breed and age, your ZIP code (vet prices vary by city), and three choices you make: the deductible, the reimbursement rate and the annual limit. A higher deductible or lower reimbursement lowers the monthly premium. See how pet insurance deductibles work.
Utah pet insurance rules
Utah has not adopted the NAIC Pet Insurance Model Act. The NAIC lists Utah Code § 31A-23a-106 (2023), which covers pet insurance under producer license types, as related activity. Pet insurance is regulated by the Utah Insurance Department. We found no state law that caps waiting periods or requires a free-look period. The department takes calls at 800-439-3805.

How to get pet insurance in Utah
You can buy a policy online in a few minutes. Lemonade sells pet insurance for dogs and cats in Utah: you enter your pet's breed and age and your ZIP code, then choose your options, such as the deductible and a 70%, 80% or 90% reimbursement rate. Illnesses are covered only after a waiting period, so it pays to start while your pet is young and healthy, before any condition counts as pre-existing (see waiting periods).
Whichever insurer you choose, read the sample policy for exclusions: pre-existing conditions, bilateral conditions, exam fees and how long the waiting periods are.
Tips for Utah pet owners
- Compare unlimited and $5,000-limit plans. The $5,000 limit was $17 a month cheaper for a dog in Forbes' study. Check the deductible too.
- Keep dogs out of green or scummy water in late summer and early fall. Rinse your dog with clean water after any lake swim.
- Carry water on desert hikes and avoid hot midday trails. Heat stroke treatment is covered, but prevention is cheaper.
- Enroll before symptoms show. Utah sets no limit on waiting periods, so check each policy.
- Keep dogs leashed on rocky trails in snake season. Rattlesnake bites are covered as accidents.
