Owning a dog or cat in Nevada means planning for desert heat, especially in Las Vegas summers. Heartworm, once rare, is now turning up more often in northwest Nevada.

How much is pet insurance in Nevada?

We couldn't find a reliable Nevada-only average, so treat national figures as a guide: price depends far more on your pet than on the state.

We couldn't confirm a current Nevada-only average: the rate study we used earlier now redirects to a national page. See the national figures in how much pet insurance costs.

Your own price depends on your pet's species, breed and age, your ZIP code (vet prices vary by city), and three choices you make: the deductible, the reimbursement rate and the annual limit. A higher deductible or lower reimbursement lowers the monthly premium. See how pet insurance deductibles work.

Nevada pet insurance rules

Nevada has not adopted the NAIC Pet Insurance Model Act; the NAIC lists no current activity there. Pet insurance is regulated by the Nevada Division of Insurance. Its consumer guide says illness waiting periods typically run 14 to 30 days and that hereditary conditions may be treated as pre-existing. It advises checking that an agent is licensed in Nevada. You can call the Division at (888) 872-3234 or file a complaint online.

  • Las Vegas and Henderson. Summer heat is the main local hazard for dogs: walk early or late, and never leave a pet in a parked car.
  • Reno. AVMA reports rising heartworm cases in northwest Nevada, so year-round prevention matters in the Reno area. (source)

How to get pet insurance in Nevada

You can buy a policy online in a few minutes. Lemonade sells pet insurance for dogs and cats in Nevada: you enter your pet's breed and age and your ZIP code, then choose your options, such as the deductible and a 70%, 80% or 90% reimbursement rate. Illnesses are covered only after a waiting period, so it pays to start while your pet is young and healthy, before any condition counts as pre-existing (see waiting periods).

Whichever insurer you choose, read the sample policy for exclusions: pre-existing conditions, bilateral conditions, exam fees and how long the waiting periods are.

Tips for Nevada pet owners

  1. Compare quotes on the same deductible, reimbursement rate and annual limit, so the prices are like for like.
  2. Walk dogs at dawn or after dark from June to September. Heat stroke treatment is covered, but it is a true emergency.
  3. Keep heartworm prevention going, especially around Reno. Prevention needs a wellness add-on, and a lapse can complicate a claim.
  4. Enroll before problems show. Nevada has no pet insurance law capping waiting periods, so read each policy's terms.
  5. Check that the agent is licensed in Nevada. The Division of Insurance offers a license lookup, online complaints and a phone line at (888) 872-3234.

Nevada pet insurance FAQ

How much is pet insurance in Nevada?

We couldn't confirm a current Nevada-only average, so use national figures as a guide: price depends mostly on your pet's age, breed and ZIP code, and on the deductible and reimbursement you choose. See how much pet insurance costs.

Does pet insurance cover heat stroke in Nevada?

A typical accident-and-illness policy covers heat stroke treatment after waiting periods. Lemonade, for example, covers emergency care, hospitalization and medications under its base plan.
