How much is pet insurance in Texas?

The average accident-and-illness policy in Texas costs $64 a month for a dog and $33 a month for a cat, according to MoneyGeek, Best Pet Insurance in Texas (2026).

MoneyGeek prices a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll with a $5,000 annual limit, a $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement. On that basis Texas ranks 35th of the states for affordability. The study doesn't break out cities. Forbes Advisor's Banfield data puts a vet visit at $68 in Houston and $62 in Austin.

Texas pet insurance rules

Texas has not adopted the NAIC Pet Insurance Model Act. The NAIC's Summer 2026 chart lists only a Texas Department of Insurance rule, 28 TAC § 5.5008. It classifies pet insurance as a "non-filed" inland marine line, covering veterinary expenses for pet illness or injury. How to get pet insurance in Texas

Tips for Texas pet owners

1. Compare quotes on the same deductible, reimbursement rate and annual limit. MoneyGeek's $64 dog average assumes $500, 80% and $5,000.
2. Keep your dog on heartworm prevention all year. Texas leads the country in cases, and a lapse can make an insurer treat the disease as preventable.
3. Walk dogs early or late in summer and carry water. Heatstroke is an emergency, so know where your nearest 24-hour vet is.
4. Enroll before symptoms show. Texas law doesn't cap waiting periods; Lemonade, for example, uses 14 days for illness and 30 for orthopedic conditions.
5. Rinse your dog after swimming in a lake with green scum, and skip the water for three days after rain, as Austin advises.
