The average accident-and-illness policy in Illinois costs $69 a month for a dog and $36 a month for a cat, according to MoneyGeek, Best Pet Insurance in Illinois (2026).
MoneyGeek prices a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll with a $5,000 annual limit, a $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement. On that basis Illinois ranks 44th of the states, 13% above the national average. The study doesn't break out cities. Forbes Advisor's Banfield data puts a dog's vet visit at $74 to $77 in Chicago suburbs.

Illinois pet insurance rules
Illinois has not adopted the NAIC Pet Insurance Model Act. Insurify reported a model-based bill in committee in 2025, but the NAIC's Summer 2026 chart still shows no Illinois activity. Pet insurance is regulated by the Illinois Department of Insurance as property and casualty insurance. The Department's consumer guide says illness waiting periods often run 14 to 30 days.
