How much is pet insurance in Florida?

The average accident-and-illness policy in Florida costs $62 a month for a dog and $32 a month for a cat, according to MoneyGeek, Best Pet Insurance in Florida (2026).

MoneyGeek prices a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll with a $5,000 annual limit, a $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement. On that basis Florida ranks 29th of the states for affordability, right at the national average. The study does not break out Miami, Tampa, Orlando or other cities.

Florida pet insurance rules

Florida adopted the NAIC Pet Insurance Model Act in 2025, as section 627.71545 of the Florida Statutes (chapter 2025-11). Waiting periods for illnesses and orthopedic conditions are capped at 30 days, and accidents can't have a waiting period. You get a 30-day free look with a full refund if no claim is filed. 2. Keep heartworm prevention going all year and keep the receipts. Some insurers deny heartworm claims if prevention lapsed.
3. Walk dogs away from standing water at dawn and dusk, when cane toads are active. Rinse your dog's mouth with a hose for 15 minutes after a bite, then call a vet.
4. Buy before hurricane season, not when a storm forms. Illness cover starts after a waiting period, though Florida law bans waiting periods for accidents.
5. Put vaccination records and your policy number in your evacuation kit. Find a pet-friendly shelter or hotel ahead of time, since most public shelters don't take pets.
