Lemonade Pet Insurance Waiting Periods: When Coverage Starts
Lemonade coverage starts at 12:01 a.m. the day after you buy. Accidents are covered from then, with no extra wait. Illnesses are covered after 14 days and orthopedic conditions such as cruciate tears after 30 days. Preventative package benefits can be used from the start date.

What we like
- No accident waiting period beyond the next-day start
- Illness wait of 14 days
- Preventative benefits usable from day one
Watch out for
- Cruciate signs before day 30 make the knee pre-existing
- Anything that starts during a wait is excluded for good unless curable
- Cancelling and rejoining restarts the waits
What are Lemonade’s waiting periods?
Lemonade’s waiting periods are 0 days for accidents, 14 days for illnesses and 30 days for orthopedic conditions. A waiting period is the time after your policy starts when new problems are not yet covered.
| What happens to your pet | Lemonade waiting period | Covered from |
|---|---|---|
| Accident, such as a cut or swallowed object | 0 days | 12:01 a.m. the day after purchase |
| Illness, such as an infection or vomiting | 14 days | 14 days after the start date |
| Orthopedic, such as a cruciate tear or hip dysplasia | 30 days | 30 days after the start date |
| Preventative package benefits | None | The start date |
Lemonade’s own waiting period guide and pet FAQ give these figures. We may earn a commission if you buy through our links.
When does Lemonade pet insurance start?
Lemonade pet insurance starts at 12:01 a.m. the day after you buy it, and every waiting period counts from that moment. Coverage never begins the same day.
Here is a worked example for a policy bought on March 1.
| Date | What is covered |
|---|---|
| March 1, the day you buy | Nothing yet |
| March 2 from 12:01 a.m. | Accidents and preventative benefits |
| About March 16 | Illnesses as well |
| About April 1 | Orthopedic conditions as well |
Your exact dates appear in your policy documents. If your pet is already hurt or sick when you buy, that problem won’t be covered. For emergencies, our guide to emergency vet coverage explains what to expect.
How does the 14-day illness waiting period work?
Any illness that shows signs during the first 14 days is excluded as pre-existing. A pre-existing condition, in Lemonade’s words, is any condition your pet showed signs of, was diagnosed with or was treated for before the waiting period ended.
That makes the timing of symptoms matter, not the diagnosis. If your cat starts vomiting on day 10 and is diagnosed on day 20, the condition began during the wait.
There is a way back for some illnesses. In most states, Lemonade can cover a curable condition, like an infection, after 12 months with no symptoms or treatment. Incurable conditions, like allergies, arthritis and endocrine diseases, stay excluded. Our pre-existing conditions guide explains the difference.
Use these 14 days well. Lemonade needs 12.5 months of medical records before it pays a first claim, and its FAQ recommends sending them as soon after the illness wait as possible.
How does the 30-day orthopedic waiting period work?
Orthopedic conditions, which involve bones, joints and ligaments, are covered only after 30 days. The rule that matters most is about the knee.
Lemonade’s FAQ says signs of a cruciate ligament issue before or during the orthopedic waiting period count as pre-existing. Lemonade also lists cruciate injuries as incurable, so they never become eligible again.
Insurify adds a related point. Lemonade treats bilateral conditions, problems that can affect both sides of the body, as pre-existing if one side had issues before. A dog with a past left-knee problem may have the right knee excluded too.
Large, active dogs face the most risk here. Forbes Advisor lists the 30-day orthopedic wait as a con. If you own a breed prone to joint trouble, like a German Shepherd, buy before any limping starts.
Why do some reviews list different Lemonade waiting periods?
Some reviews quote older or state-specific terms. CNBC Select and Insurify list a 2-day accident wait and a 6-month cruciate ligament wait.
| Source | Accidents | Illness | Orthopedic | Cruciate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lemonade waiting period guide | 0 days | 14 days | 30 days | Within orthopedic |
| NerdWallet (May 2026) | None | 14 days | 30 days | Not listed separately |
| Forbes Advisor (July 2026) | Next day | 14 days | 30 days | Not listed separately |
| CNBC Select, Insurify | 2 days | 14 days | 30 days | 6 months |
Lemonade’s guide notes that its policy terms differ by state of residence. Before you buy, read the waiting period section of the sample policy shown in your quote. That document, not a review, decides your claim.
When should you buy to make the most of the waits?
Buy while your pet is healthy and before any planned move or switch, because every new policy restarts the clocks.
| Situation | What the waits mean for you |
|---|---|
| New puppy or kitten | Buy early, before the first signs of common young-pet illnesses |
| Switching from another insurer | Keep the old policy until the new one is past 14 and 30 days |
| Cancelling and rejoining Lemonade | Waits reset, and recent problems may be pre-existing |
| Pet already limping or unwell | That problem will be excluded |
Lemonade’s dog insurance page confirms the reset when you cancel and reactivate. Our general waiting periods guide compares how other policies handle this, and our guide to cancelling or switching covers timing a change.
Do Lemonade add-ons have waiting periods?
Lemonade’s preventative packages have no waiting period. Lemonade says preventative benefits start the day after purchase, so a checkup or vaccine on day one can be reimbursed.
That includes the Puppy and Kitten packages, which cover spay or neuter, microchipping and up to six vaccines. If you are insuring a new puppy, our puppy insurance guide covers timing around the first vet visits.
Lemonade’s pages we read do not state separate waiting periods for its Dental Illness, physical therapy or Vet Visit Fees add-ons. Check those in your quote.
Bottom line
Lemonade covers accidents from 12:01 a.m. the day after you buy, illnesses after 14 days and orthopedic problems after 30 days. Anything that shows signs before those dates is excluded, and a cruciate problem is excluded for good. Buy while your pet is healthy and send medical records right after the first two weeks. Frequently asked questions
When does Lemonade pet insurance start?
Lemonade's waiting period guide says policies become active at 12:01 a.m. the day after purchase, and the waiting periods count down from then. So a policy bought on a Monday afternoon starts at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. A vet visit on the day you buy is not covered.
Does Lemonade have a waiting period for accidents?
No, beyond the next-day start. Lemonade lists the accident waiting period as 0 days, with cover from 12:01 a.m. the day after purchase. NerdWallet and Forbes Advisor report the same. Some reviews, including CNBC Select and Insurify, list 2 days, as does Lemonade's general FAQ for some states, so check the policy documents shown in your quote.
What happens if my pet gets sick during Lemonade's waiting period?
The illness is treated as pre-existing and is not covered. Lemonade defines pre-existing as anything your pet showed signs of before the waiting period ended. If the illness is curable and your pet then goes 12 months without symptoms or treatment, Lemonade can cover it again in most states. See our pre-existing conditions guide.
Can I waive Lemonade's waiting period?
Lemonade's pages we read do not offer a waiver. Its waiting period guide notes that policy terms differ by state, so ask Lemonade whether any waiver applies where you live. Our waiting periods guide explains how state rules work.
Do Lemonade's waiting periods restart at renewal?
No. Waiting periods apply when a new policy starts. Lemonade's dog insurance page warns that if you cancel and later reactivate, the waiting periods reset. Lemonade also lets you raise coverage only within 14 days of purchase or at renewal, so pick your limits carefully at the start.
