How much is pet insurance in Massachusetts?

The average accident-and-illness policy in Massachusetts costs $81 a month for a dog and $42 a month for a cat, according to MoneyGeek, Best Pet Insurance in Massachusetts (2026).

MoneyGeek prices a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever and a 7-year-old Ragdoll with a $5,000 annual limit, a $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement. On that basis Massachusetts ranks 49th for affordability, 31% above the national average. The study does not break out Boston, Worcester or other cities.

Your own price depends on your pet's species, breed and age, your ZIP code (vet prices vary by city), and three choices you make: the deductible, the reimbursement rate and the annual limit. A higher deductible or lower reimbursement lowers the monthly premium. See how pet insurance deductibles work.

How to get pet insurance in Massachusetts

You can buy a policy online in a few minutes. Lemonade sells pet insurance for dogs and cats in Massachusetts: you enter your pet's breed and age and your ZIP code, then choose your options, such as the deductible and a 70%, 80% or 90% reimbursement rate. Illnesses are covered only after a waiting period, so it pays to start while your pet is young and healthy, before any condition counts as pre-existing (see waiting periods).

Whichever insurer you choose, read the sample policy for exclusions: pre-existing conditions, bilateral conditions, exam fees and how long the waiting periods are.

Tips for Massachusetts pet owners

  1. Massachusetts premiums run 31% above average. A higher deductible or 70% reimbursement can lower the monthly price.
  2. Check your dog for ticks after woods and tall grass, spring through fall. Lyme treatment is covered, but tick medication needs a wellness add-on.
  3. Keep dogs out of ponds with scum or green water in summer and early fall. Rinse your dog with clean water and call a vet if it swims in a bloom.
  4. Enroll before symptoms show. Waiting periods are set by the policy, since Massachusetts has no pet insurance law limiting them.
  5. Have an older dog? Read our senior dog guide, since premiums rise with age in a high-cost state.
