Hi, I’m Roger,

When my brother told me he had Pet Insurance,

I internally laughed at the idea.

Why anyone would need Pet Insurance I thought.

That changed when I took Bogart my yellow lab to the vet because he was sick. He had a large rash by his ear and was not eating. He was given medications and started on a downhill spiral. We found out he had diabetes
and the medications made it apparent. That was a $750 later.

The diabetes is causing blindness which is common for dogs.

How to Get the Best Deal on Pet Insurance

Look at pet insurance as a form of financial planning.  If you are like many of us, your pet is like a member of the family and as such you want to take care of it in the event of an accident, life threatening disease or major medical condition.

A good pet insurance policy can free you from having to worry about not only accidents and illnesses, but also regular checkups, shots and vaccinations, dental care, etc.  Pet insurance will help ease the burden of what can be massive medical costs for your pet.

Also, bear in mind that pet insurance isn’t limited to just paying veterinary bills.  Many policies for your pet will cover other incidents.  As an example, if your pet is stolen it may pay to offer a reward for its return.  Be sure to check out these extra coverage’s when shopping for a pet insurance policy.

With the wide assortment of pet insurance now available, you’ll want to shop around for the best premium, as prices can vary widely.  The first thing you’ll want to look at in comparing policies is the deductible and percent paid for covered expenses.   Remember: the higher the deductible you choose, the lower your premium.

You’ll also want to look for hereditary conditions that are excluded.  Many breed are known to have certain conditions that are passed from generation to generation.  Make sure one of these doesn’t apply to your pet or you may find it excluded by a pet insurance company and your policy would essentially be worthless.

Next, look at what the maximum pay out limit is per year.  Many policies limit the amount that can be covered annually, which can be a problem if you have an older animal or one that needs regular treatment.  You might find yourself without coverage part way into the year.

Here’s something most people don’t think of when shopping for pet insurance.  If you have multiple pets, as if there is a discount for buying coverage for all your pets.  This will give you some additional leverage.

Finally, you can ask your veterinarian for a referral to a good pet insurance company.  After all, that’s the person who treats your pet and who should know what pet insurance company would best meet your needs.  Many veterinarians belong to a network of insurance agencies and companies and can provide detailed information about what they do and don’t cover and which one is bet suited for your particular pet.  Since they will be billing that insurance company, they will want to make sure it’s a good one.
